Question

A psychological experiment was done to investigate the effect of anxiety on a person's desire to be alone or in company. A group of 30 subjects was randomly divided into two groups of sizes 13 and 17. The subjects were told that they would be subjected to some electric shocks, but one group was told that the shocks would be quite painful and the other group was told that they would be mild and painless. The former group was the "high-anxiety" group, and the latter was the "low-anxiety" group. Both groups were told that there would be a 10-min wait before the experiment began, and each subject was given the choice of waiting alone or with the other subjects. The following are the results: (a) Use Fisher's exact test to test whether there is a significance difference between the high-arid low- anxiety groups. Use alpha = 0.05. (b) Use a Chi Square test of independence to address the same question as part (a). Also use alpha = 0.05.

Explanation / Answer

There are two attributes

A : Anxiety

B : Alone or in company.

We can solve this question using R software.

a) Null and alternative hypothesis is

H0: There is not differece between the high and low anxiety groups.

Ha: There is differece between the high and low anxiety groups.

R codes and commands

data <- matrix(c(12,5,4,9),
              nrow = 2,
              dimnames = list(Truth=c("wait together","wait alone"),
                              Guess=c("High anxiety","low anxiety")));

fisher.test(data, alternative = "two.sided")

P-value = 0.00577

p-value < 0.05 we reject null hypothesis.

Conclusion : There is differece between the high and low anxiety groups.

b) Null and alternative hypothesis is

H0: There is not differece between the high and low anxiety groups.

Ha: There is differece between the high and low anxiety groups.

R codes and commands

p-value = 0.007054

p-value < 0.05 we reject null hypothesis.

Conclusion : There is differece between the high and low anxiety groups.
