Question

Here is a brief description of the game of American Roulette. There is a wheel and a table. The roulette table has a spinning wheel with 38 "pockets" which are numbered 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, …, 34, 35, and 36. Eighteen (18) of the pockets are colored red and eighteen of pockets (18) are colored black. These pockets are numbered 1 through 36. The two special pockets, known as "zero" and "double zero", are colored green. No adjacent pockets have the same color. Players place a wager on the table trying to guess the number or a characteristic of the number the ball will land on. When the wheel is spun, the ball spins around the wheel in opposite direction until it loses momentum and drops into one of the wheel’s pockets.

The objective of the game is to guess the number that the ball lands on or some characteristics of the number (color of the number, odd or even, low or high, etc.).

Now that you have learned some probability and statistics, have you tried to test your winning strategies to see if they make any sense? :) Just joking…

In casinos, some people hang around roulette tables to study the frequency of occurrences of various numbers. For example, they stand by a table and count the number of times a red number comes up. When several red numbers come up in consecutive spins, they reason that then it is about time for a black number to come up. Therefore, they bet on Black. They believe by following that strategy they are increasing their chance of winning.

·         What do you think of these individuals’ strategies? Do you agree with them? Does their chance of winning increase? Why or why not?

·         Can you articulate your reasons in terms of probability concepts that you have learned so far?

Please type answer.

Explanation / Answer

one such strategy can be to note down the frequency of such occurences.
such as the number of time of of black ,red and green.
when the consecutive data are taken then the probability of the next one to be repetative is =18/38,18/38,2/38
which makes it almost as if there is no strategy.
But if a set of more results are considered then the probability of repeatition is increased and hence such strategy may work.
