Question
Complete the answers to the following questions. Many stores run "secret sales". They give out a card where you scratch off the covering to determine what discount you will received after you take your merchandise to the register. The store is required to give the distribution of discounts so they put it in small print. Which of the distributions below is plausible based on what you know about probability? Remember probability can only be a value between 0 and 1 and for an entire set of probabilities they must equal 1.Explanation / Answer
As already mentioned in the question, as an apparent hint, no probability can be negative or greater than 1 and sum of all probabilities must be exactly equal to 1.
By this rule,
A is ruled out since total of all probabilities is only 0.8, not 1.
B is also ruled out since total of all probabilities at 1.1 exceeds 1.
C satisfies all conditions and hence it is a possible answer.
D has last probability negative and hence does not qualify.
E also satisfies all conditions and hence it is also a possible answer.
Now, between C and E, C is right choice because since the discount factor is a secret, there is an element of uncertainty, but E does not have any uncertainty. It is always 10% in E.
