Question

There are two ways to use probability density functions (PDFs). The first assumes we know the parameters of the distribution, and we wish to estimate the probability of an outcome. The second assumes we have observed outcomes, and want to estimate the parameters. Using some example (this can be as simple as coin flipping or cars through a toll booth), illustrate the difference between these two ways of using PDFs, and explain why in social science we’re nearly always in the second situation. (Hint: This is the difference between PDFs and Likelihood functions, if that helps.)

Explanation / Answer

Difference between PDFs and Likelihood function,

PDF is designed or it is mathimatical function for differnt types of random variables. It is used to find probability of given random variable of definite PDFs i.e. it is method of estimating probability from given parameter values of perticular random variable.

Likelihood function is defined as function of parameters given the sampls or data. It is used to estimate parametrs of a statistical model from given data.

In Social sciences to predict result according to aims of study from sample is better for prediction and achiving good results therefore we in social sciences Likelihood function is always used.
