Question
Compare the numbers in each of the following settings additively and multiplicatively. Describe a situation for which you’d consider the change additively and then a situation for which you’d consider the change multiplicatively. Your current rent is $500 per month. Next month you will have to begin paying $700 per month. Sixth grade will move from your elementary school to the middle school, making your school run from kindergarten to grade 5 only. Current enrollment is 675 students, but next year it will be 540 students
Explanation / Answer
Additive setting : It involves or describes two quantities that are described with respect to the difference between them as in: how much is a - b? Like saying a is 4 more than b or b is 10 less than a.
Multiplicative setting : involves a comparison of two quantities in which one is described as a multiple of the other. The relation between quantities is described in terms of how many times larger one is than the other. Like a is 4 times larger than b.
Situation : Your current rent is $500 per month. Next month you will have to begin paying $700 per month.
Additive : The rent I'll be paying next month is $200 more than the rent I'm paying this month which is $500.
Multiplicative : The rent I'll be paying next month is 1.4 times or 40% larger than the rent I'm paying this month which is $500.

Situation : Sixth grade will move from your elementary school to the middle school, making your school run from kindergarten to grade 5 only. Current enrollment is 675 students, but next year it will be 540 students.
Additive : The enrollment next year is 135 students lesser than the current enrollment and the current enrollment is 675 students.
Multiplicative: The enrollment next year is 80% of or 0.8 times the current enrollment this year and the current enrollment this year is 675 students.
