Question

A toy maker makes wooden toy train sets and wooden toy monster trucks. It takes 6 hours to cut and assemble a train set and 3 hours to paint it by hand. It takes 4 hours to cut and assemble a truck and 2 hours to paint it by hand. When he sells a train set, he makes a profit of $28, and when he sells a truck, he makes a profit of $18. How many of each should he make within a 45-hour week, if he does not want any unfinished toys at the end of the week? (Assume he wants the maximum profit). The toy maker should make train sets and monster trucks to maximize his profit.

Explanation / Answer

Thus From the above table it is clear that the per hour profit is more for the train sets. And also there will be no unfinished toys, If train sets are made.

Therefore making the train sets are far more profitable i.e. maximised profit and no unfinished toys will be there. Thus Toys maker should make the Train sets

Additional :

Profit: Number of toys made * Profit for each set

For Train sets:

Number of train sets made= 45/9 = 5 train sets

Total Profit = 5 * 28 = $ 140

For Trucks:

Number of trucks made= 45/6 = 7.5 trucks or 7 and one half finished

Total Profit = 7.5 * 18 = $ 135

Total Profit for finished trucks= 7 * 18 = $ 126

Thus making train sets will maximise the profit and no unfinished toy will be there.
