Suppose BMI at 20 weeks' gestation has a mean of =28.5 with a standard deviation of =3.6. (4 marks) a. What is the probability that one of the pregnant women seeing the local obstetrician at 20 weeks' gestation has a BMI of 35? What is the probability that one of the pregnant women seeing the local obstetrician at 20 weeks' gestation has a BMI between 25 and 30? b.

Explanation / Answer

Given mean=28.5 and Standard deviation=3.6

Since probability depends on the random causes, it follows Normal distribution.

Therefore we need to find 'z' values and z=(x-mean)/(standard deviation)

a)z=35-28.5/3.6 = 6.5/3.6 = 1.81

By looking in the normal distribution table for z, we get

Probability=0.9649

b)To get lower value of 'z' =25-28.5/3.6 = -3.5/3.6 = -0.97 for which the value in the normal distribution table is 0.1660 i.e., 01-(0.97) = 1-0.8340(z value)

To get higher value of 'z' =30-28.5/3.6 = 1.5/3.6 = 0.42 for which we get 0.6628

Probability between BMI 25 and 30 =0.6628-0.1660 = 0.4968
