B) Find the median, first quartile, third quartile, interquartile range and the semi-interquartile range. Calculate median + OR - 3 (Semi -IQR) and use this to determine if there are any outliers in the data. SHOW ALL WORK

Explanation / Answer

(A)

(B)

Median

The numeric value separating the higher half of the sample data from the lower half.

median = (15+16)/2 = 15.5

First quartile: The first quartile, or 25th percentile xL (also written as Q1), is the number for which 25% of values in the data set are smaller than xL = (7+9)/2 = 8

Third quartile: The third quartile or 75th percentile, xH (Q3) is the value such that 75% of the observations are less than xH = (33+35)/2 = 34

Interquartile range = Third - first quartile = 34-8 = 26

Semiquartile range = IQR/2 = 13

OR = obs. range = max - min = 85-2 = 83

median + OR - 3 (Semi -IQR) = 15.5 +83 -3(13) = 15.5 + 83 -39 = 59.5

so any number greater than it, is outlier i.e. 85
