Activity Due Date: 01/08/2017 Activity Description For this assignment, use the statistical knowledge and scientific writing skills acquired in this course to complete Mock Study). Carefully review the information provided about the mock study, and then address each assignment the signature Assignment requirement. You are the director of Institutional Research at a small state university and you have been given the task of gathering in for the dean of the School of Education regarding the performance of Data on six their undergraduate students on the Graduate Record variables were collected: gender, overall grade point GPA GRE uantitative, GRE verbal and type of preparation programs, university is dedicated major The university has established five The to maximize student success on the different options for students to prepare for the GREs: option 1 online course, 2 online synchronous prep course, 3 complete a hybrid prep course with a combination of online and face to face; 4 complete a traditional instructor led prep course, and 5 self-paced paper based prep course. The dean has simply asked you, Tell me what works best and for whom? You decide to establish a pilot study with 50 randomly selected general science education seniors to determine the details of the methodology as well as to provide some initial data and corresponding results to leam if the research plan meets the dean's needs. The pilot study needs to contain the following components written in APA format Part 1: 1. Develop a clear purpose statement sentence capturing the essence of the intent of the pilot study. 2. Develop a brief introduction including three research questions (with the use of corresponding symbols or Q1., Q2. Q3.) related to the purpose of the pilot study. 3. Develop a null and altemative hypothesis (with the use of corresponding symbols or Ho1 Ha1: Ho2:, Ha2:, Ho3, Ha3:) for each of the three research questions. 4. Use a statistical decision chart similar to Gragetter and Inau (2013) in Chapter 19, and then select the appropriate statistical Wall test/analysis for each research question. Briefly explain the choices for each research question. 5. Conduct each analysis using SPSS on the SPSS data set developed in the Create a Mock Data Set in Week 7. The output of those tests should be placed in an Appendix for the final report to the dean. 6. Present and discuss the findings (as related to each research question and the fail to reject or rejection of each null hypothesis) in APAExplanation / Answer
Solution:
Part 1
Question 1
Purpose of the research study:
To study the relationship between the graduate record exam scores and other variables such as gender, overall grade point average (GPA), major GPA, GRE scores in major area, GRE quantitative, GRE verbal and type of preparation programs.
Question 2
For this research study we have to study the following three research questions:
First of all we have to check the claim or hypothesis whether there is any significant difference in the GRE scores for the male and female students. Then after we have to check the hypothesis whether there is any significant relationship exists between the overall grade point average (GPA) and GRE score or not. Also, we have to check whether there is any significant difference observed in the GRE scores for students with five different types of preparation programs.
Question 3
The null and alternative hypothesis for the above research questions are summarised as below:
Null hypothesis: H01: There is no any significant difference in the average GRE scores for the male and female students.
Alternative hypothesis: Ha1: There is a significant difference in the average GRE score for the male and female students.
Null hypothesis: H02: There is no any statistically significant relationship exists between the two variables overall grade point average (GPA) and GRE score.
Alternative hypothesis: Ha2: There is a statistically significant relationship exists between the two variables overall grade point average (GPA) and GRE score.
Null hypothesis: H03: There is no any significant difference observed in the average GRE scores for the students with five different types of preparation programs.
Alternative hypothesis: Ha3: There is a significant difference observed in the average GRE scores for the students with five different types of preparation programs.
Question 4
For checking the first hypothesis we have to use the two sample t test for the population mean. Here, we do not know the population standard deviation in advance so we will use the two sample t test instead of z test. We will assume equal population variance for this two sample t test. For the second hypothesis we will use the t test for the correlation coefficient because we want to check whether there is any significant relationship exists between two variables or not. For the third hypothesis or research question, we will use the one way analysis of variance or ANOVA test for checking the significant difference between the average GRE scores for the students with five different types of preparation programs. We know that for more than two samples we use the one way ANOVA for checking the significant difference in the averages.
