Question
Are You Listening To Me? Researchers at Harris Interactive asked a random sample of males and females: "Are you annoyed by people who repeatedly check their mobile phones while having an in-person conversation?" Among the 510 males surveyed, 178 responded "Yes"; among the 500 females surveyed, 206 responded "Yes." Does the evidence suggest at level alpha = 0.05 hat a higher proportion of females are annoyed by this behavior? Course Redesign In many colleges and universities around the country, educators are changing their approach to instruction from a "teacher/lecture-centered model" to a "student-centered model" where students learn in a laboratory environment in which lecture is deemphasized and students can proceed at a pace suitable to their learning needs. In one school where this model was being introduced, of the 743 students who enrolled in the traditional lecture model, 36M passed; of the 567 students in the student-centered mod 335 passed. Does the evidence suggest that the student-centered model results in a higher pass rate than the traditional model? Use the alpha = 0.1 level of significance.Explanation / Answer
let female is 1 and men is 2
hence p1=206/560=0.3679
and p2=178/540=0.3296
hence std error=(p1(1-p1)/n1+p2(1-p2)/n2)1/2 =0.0287
therefore test stat z=(p1-p2)/std error =1.331
for above for one tailed test, p value =0.0915
as p value is higher then 0.05 level, we do not have sufficient evidence that female are more annoyed.
eg3) let student centered is 1 and traditional 2
hence p1=335/567=0.5908
and p2=364/743=0.4899
std error =0.0276 from above given formula
hence test stat z =(p1-p2)/std error =3.654
p value =0.0001
here p value is less then 0.1 level, therefore we can accept the claim that pass rate is higher for student centered model.
