Question
Consider the following examples of research findings:
1.High satisfaction with one’s direct supervisor leads to lower levels of employee turnover. In other words, employees who are highly satisfied with their direct supervisor are less likely to leave an organization than employees who are dissatisfied with their direct supervisor (DeConinck, 2009).
2.High levels of parental reading are associated with faster cognitive development in young children. In other words, children who are read to more by their parents show faster cognitive development than children who are read to less often (National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2007).
3.The experience of being socially excluded leads to increases in aggressive behavior. Research has found that when people are excluded by others, they are more likely to behave aggressively, even to people who did not initially exclude them (Twenge, Baumeister, Tice, & Stucke, 2001).
4.Defendants who wear glasses are less likely to be convicted by juries as being guilty of committing violent crimes (Brown, Henriquez, & Groscup, 2008).
In a brief paper, describe a potential mediator and moderator that could apply to each research finding. Be sure to clearly explain what a mediator and moderator are, and be sure to clearly describe how they relate to each research situation.
Explanation / Answer
In statistics mediator is the one which tries to logically separate the dependent variable from the independent variable while moderator tries to explain the strength and direction of the relationship between the dependent and independent variable.
a) in this part we can logically argue that likeliness to leave the organization is a dependent variable while satisfation with supervisor is and independent variable. But there is no way to quantify the strength of this relation between supervisor and the employees.
b) this part states that children who are read to more often by their parents have higher cognitive skills where on can check this relationship by assuming strength of cognitive skill as the dependent variable while frequency of being read by the parent as independent variable but problem again is that how do we quantise the strength of cognitive skill.
c) In this statement the researcher have to quantise the aggresion exhibited by the person while the frequency of the exclusion can be regarded as independent varaible but there is one problem here, we can not be sure which one is independent as another researcher can draw a relation that aggressive people are left isolated from the society.
d) well this one is pretty simple as you can easily guess that defendent wearing glasses can be regarded as independent variable while his frequencey of being convicted as dependent variable and the researcher can confirm the relation given in this part.
