Question
Explanation / Answer
Answer
A bit theory
The empirical rule can be divided into three parts
68% of the data falls within one standard deviation from the mean
95% of the data falls within two standard deviation from the mean
99.7% of the data falls within three standard deviation from the mean
Here the heights of men on a basketball team ( say X ) have a bell shaped distribution with mean of 172 cm and standard deviation of 7 cm.
a) So the percentage of players having height within 165cm and 179 cm or (172 - 7) cm and (172 + 7) cm which is nothing but the percentage of heights having value within one standard deviation of mean value.
So by empirical rule the required percentage be 68%
b) Here the percentage of players having height within 151cm and 193 cm or (172 - 3x7) cm and (172 + 3x7) cm which is nothing but the percentage of heights having value within three standard deviation of mean value.
So by empirical rule the required percentage be 99.7%
Hence the answer.............
