Question

A study was conducted among teenagers in the New York City area to assess the relationship between alcohol abuse and major depression. 150 teenagers who were admitted to local hospitals with their first episode of major depression were identified and interviewed about their drinking habits during the two years preceding their diagnosis. The investigators then identified 300 other teenagers who were admitted to local hospitals for fractures or other musculoskeletal injuries; none of which had a diagnosis of depression. These teens were interviewed about their drinking habits during the past two years. Among the 150 teens with major depression, 80 reported that they had abused alcohol (defined as having at least 7 drinks a week). Among the other 300 teenagers, 100 reported that they abused alcohol.
