Question

A major league baseball player went up to bat 503 times during a certain season. He had the following number of hits: 86 singles, 40 doubles, 7 triples and 23 home runs. He also had 80 strikeouts and 63 walks. (Some basic baseball definitions are below) What is the probability of him hitting a single when he comes to bat? Number (Round to three decimal places.) What is the probability he strikes out or walks when he comes to bat? Number (Round to three decimal places.) If he gets a hit, what is the probability it is a home run? Number (Round to three decimal places.) (A single means the batter advanced to 1st base after hitting the ball. Similarly, a double means the batter advanced to 2nd base and a triple means the batter advanced to 3rd base. A home run means that after hitting the ball, the batter advanced past all three bases and returned to home base to score. A strikeout means the batter does not hit the ball in an approved way and does not advance to any base, a walk means the batter advances to 1st base because the majority of pitches were not in an approved range for him to hit)

Explanation / Answer

Total number of times player went to bat = 503

number of singles = 86

number of doubles = 40

number of triples = 7

number of home runs = 23

Total number of hits = 86+40+7+23 = 156

number of strikeouts = 80

number of walks = 63

i) Probability of hitting a single when he comes to bat is = 86/503 = 0.171

Explanation: here sample space is total number of times he went to bat (i.e 503) and our event is number of singles he hit (i.e 86)

ii) Probability he strikes out or walks when he comes to bat is = (80/503)+(63/503)= 0.284

Explanation: here srtikeouts and walks are independent events and sample space is total number of times he went to bat. so, summing up their probabilities will be the answer.

iii) if he hits probability that it is a home run is = (23/156) = 0.147

Explanation: here our event is getting a home run and the sample space is total number of hits
