Question

You need to address a hypothesis testing question that interests you with the methodology learned in LGT5101. A sample question is: Are men more likely than women to help someone who has dropped his or her books? More sample questions can be found in this website: https://www2.stat.duke.edu/jerry/sta103/proj2_instr.htm. You need to write a short report (at most two A4 pages), including the question that you would like to address, how you collected data (it is understandable if the data size is small), the data, and your analysis and conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

We consider the sample question: "Are men more likely than women to help someone who has dropped his or her books?"

To provide definitive answer, we start with a simple setup. A person (gender not considered at the moment) would drop books at the arrival of 7th person at every 5 minutes interval. We would make a note of whether the 7th person helps or not and also make a note of the gender of the person in question. This experiment would be repeated over a 3 hours times which would give us n = 36 observations.

For the n = 36 observations, we have information on the gender and whether help to pick up the books was offered or not. An indicative data is given below:

A chi-square test can be carried out to test whether the help depends on the gender or not.

Sl N0 Gender Help 1 Male Yes 2 Male No 36 Female Yes
