Question

Tell in each of the following instances whether the study uses an independent samples or a matched pairs design. a) Military test pilots who had at least one accident are matched by length of experience to pilots without accidents. The two groups are then surveyed about the number of childhood accidents to determine if the former group of pilots is accident prone b) Lung cancer patients admitted in a hospital over a 12 month period are each matched with a noncancer patient by age, sex, and race. To determine whether or not smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, it is noted for each patient if he or she is a smoker. c) A survey is conducted of college bound and no college bound high school seniors to compare the proportion who have at least one parent who attended college. d) An advertising agency has come up with two different TV commercials for a household detergent. To determine which one is more effective, a test conducted in which a sample of 100 adults is randomly divided into two groups. Each group is shown a different commercial, and the people in the group are asked to score the commercial. e) What are advantages/disadvantages to use matched pairs design? Will be results the same?

Explanation / Answer

Independent samples are when 2 samples are selected completely differently with no dependency on the other group.

The members in 1 group are not present in the other group

Matched pairs are when same members are used in a pre-post treatment setup . Keeping this in mind

a) The length of experience is used to match the pilots. hence , there is a dependency between the groups . hence it is a matched pair test

b) again the dependency is based on age sex and race so it is a matched pair

c) the 2 samples are completely independent , one college going and other no college bound . Hence this is a independent sample test

d) Here the 2 samples are completely random with no dependency on one another.100 samples are randomly devidedhence this is a indepenent sample
