Question

Find the indicated probabilities using the geometric distribution, the Poisson distribution, or the binomial distribution. Then determine if the events are unusual. If convenient, use the appropriate probability table or technology to find the probabilities. Assume the probability that you will make a sale on any given telephone call is 0.11. Find the probability that you (a) make your sale on the fifth call, b) make your sale on the first, second, or third call c) do not make a sale on the first three calls. Which of the events are unusual?

Explanation / Answer

a) probability that you   make your sale on the fifth call =P(first 4 call no sale *sale on fifth call)

=(1-0.11)4*0.11 =0.0690

b) probability that you   make  sale on the first, second, or third call =1-P(no sale till first 3 call) =1-(0.89)3 =0.2950

c)probability of no sale in first 3 calls =(0.89)3 =0.7050

as all the event have probabilty more then 0.05 `; we can not claim that any event is unsual; however, event a is relatively more unusual then others
