Question

UMUC Stats Club conducted an online poll of 300 adults in August 2016. One question was “Do you agree that US should have more gun control laws?”. 120 adults answered “Yes”.

In a similar online poll conducted in 2012, 35% of adults supported more gun control laws. In order to determine if the proportion of adults who support more gun control laws in 2016 is higher than 4 years ago, we would like to perform the following hypothesis test:

H0: p=0.35

Ha: p>0.35

(a) (2 pts) Find the test statistic. (Show work and round the answer to two decimal places)

(b) (2 pts) Determine the P-value for this test. (Show work and round the answer to three decimal places. If you use technology to find the P-value, you have to describe the steps)

(c) (1 pt) Is there sufficient evidence to justify the rejection of 0 H at the = 0.05 level? Explain

Explanation / Answer

a) here std error =(p(1-p)/n)1/2 where p=0.35 ; n=300

=0.0275

phat =120/300=0.4

hence test stat z=(phat-p)/std error =(0.4-0.35)/0.0275 =1.8157

b)p value =0.0347

c) as p value is less then 0.05 level,  there is sufficient evidence to justify the rejection of Ho
