Question

A psychologist is studying the effects of dream deprivation on a person's anxiety level during waking hours. Brian waves, heart rate, and eye movements can be used to determine if a sleeping person is about to enter into a dream period. Three groups of subjects were randomly chosen from a large group of college students who volunteered to participate in the study Group 1 subjects had their sleep interrupted four times each night, but never during or immediately before a dream. Group 2 subjects had their sleep interrupted four times also, but on two occasions they were wakened at the onset of a dream. Group 3 subjects were wakened four times, each time at the onset of a dream. This procedure was repeated for 10 nights, and each day ail subjects were given a test to determine their levels of anxiety. The data recorded in the table is the total of the test scores for each person over the entire project. Higher totals mean higher anxiety levels.

Explanation / Answer

I belive you are looking to know the null and alternate hypothesis. It can be stated as follows:-

H0: 1 = 2 = 3

H1: j not all equal

Group 1 - 9,7,3,6,5,8 X1=6.33

Group 2 - 10,9,11,10,7,6,8 X2=8.71

Group 3 - 15,11,12,9,10 X3=11.4

X=8.82, n=18, c=3

SSA=5(6.33-8.82)2+5(8.71-8.82)2+5(11.4-8.82)2=70.038

SSW= (9-6.33)2….. (10-11.4)2=63.96

MSA=70.038/ (3-1) =35.019

MSW=63.96/ (18-3) =4.264

FSTAT=35.019/4.264=8.212
