Question
This video is from Khan Academy. Sal Khan is very detailed on how to make manual calculations. In this class, we will use calculation tools, so don't worry. The fundamentals are important. Our focus will be on Mean, Median, Standard Deviation, IQR. The Mode and Range have special applications. In another video, Skewness will be discussed.

Here's the calculation and please explain more so I can understand. Please enjoy the video.
In Algebra, the slope intercept formula: y = mx + b
Where m is the slope, and b is the y-intercept.
What is y and x?
The variable y is the Dependent variable
The variable x is the Independent variable
Once x is set, y can be determined
In practical use, a person spends money and can be transported a certain distance. For instance, put $3 of gasoline in a car and it will travel a certain number of miles.
IV: x = $3
DV: y = distance traveled

Men are worse at math than Women. A math test was given to five women and fine men.
IV: Gender with two levels, women, men
DV: Math score
Explanation / Answer
The variable y is the Dependent variable
The variable x is the Independent variable
Once x is set, y can be determined. This means that changing the value of x will give us a predicted value of y.
Y is dependent on X. Hence,y is independent variable.
Like, x is the worth of gasoline in the car and y is the number of miles travelled. Clearly, number of miles travelled is dependent on the amount of gasoline . hece IV is the money and DV is the distance travelled.
Similarly, The dependent variable is the math score when the independent variable which is changed is gender.
Hence, the quantity which we can change is the independent variable.
