Question
Suppose you know that the area to the right of z is 0.24. Answer all of the following questions without finding the actual value of z.
Hint: Draw a picture.
1) Is z positive or negative?
2) What is the area to the left of z?
3) What is the area to the left of -z?
4) What is the area between -z and z?
And now, because I know you want to.....
5) What is the value of z to two decimal places?
So I cam up with these answers so far, not sure if they are even correct.
1) positive
2) .5948
3) .4052
For 4 and 5 I am not sure how to even get to these answers.
Explanation / Answer
1) z is Positive
2) Area to the left of z = 1 - 0.24 = 0.76
3) Area to the left of -z = 0.24
4) Area between -z and z = Area to the left of z - Area to the left of -z = 0.76 - 0.24 = 0.52
5) From the standard normal distribution table, the value of z corresponding to area 0.76 to the left is
z = 0.71
