Question

suppose you are a senior experimenter in a firm that took on a job to determine which of three fertilizers (A,B & C) results in the highest yield of potatoes. This project is handed to you and you are expected to plan the experiment.

(a) Plan this experiment. Document the design including explanation of the variables that will be controlled and how they will be controlled.

(b) Discuss how blocking can be used in this experiment and use examples to enhance your explanation.

(c) identify dependent and independent variables, confonding variables.

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

Objective : To determine which of the fertilizer is more effective for the yield of potatoes.

Planning:

To find the effectiveness of the fertilizers, we will proceed with the ANOVA test to determine whether all the fertilizer results in same potatoe yield.

Now to rank the effectiveness of the fertilizers, we will perform the T comparision test to determine which of the all fertilizer results in highest potatoe yield.

Finally a regression model could be used to see the effect of independent variable on the yield of potatoes.

Test:

To Conduct Anova test, we will use the sample data of potato yield under the three different fertlizer.

Assumptions underlies this test are:

Population must be normal.

Population have common variance.

Observation are inpendent.

The test result will confirm for us whether these fertilizers have same or different yield.

Now we will conduct the other test to see which one have the highest yield of potatoes.

We use a least significant approach for this test.

Part B)

blocking is the arranging of experimental units in groups (blocks) that are similar to one another. We have three groups of fertilizer and we can divide these groups further into subgroups depending on the type of potatoes. Blocking helps use to refine the study, so that the effect of any of the variable could be studied more efficiently and also, we get an extra variables to explain the cause. This improves the experiment quality.

Part C)

For the modelling purpose.

Dependent variable could be Yield of potato,

Independent variable could be

Fertilizer type (A,B or C)

Soil Type

sand proportion

Silt Proportion

Clay Proportion

pH level

Confonding variabe could be

Moisture above the sand

Environment Pressure

Intensity of sun light.
