Question
A statistics professor asked students in a class their weight. The professor states that the average weight of all the students in the university is 150 lbs. This is an example of: A. a census B. descriptive statistics C. an experiment D. statistical inference If the variance of a data set is correctly computed with the formula using n - 1 in the denominator, which of the following is true: A. the data set is a sample B. the data set is a population C. the data set could be either a sample or a population D. the data set is from a census Which of the following pairs of events (A and B) are mutually exclusive? A. A = studying 7 hours a day, B = sleeping 15 hours a day. B. A = swimming a mile each day, B = having a full-time job. C. A = playing professional basketball, B = making a million dollars. D. A = running, B = playing soccer. If 12 babies are born, how many different gender sequences are possible? A. 1096 B. 4096 C. 479,001, 600 D. 144 When would it be better to use the median instead of mean in regards to central tendency?Explanation / Answer

23.
The mean has one main disadvantage: it is particularly susceptible to the influence of outliers. These are values that are unusual compared to the rest of the data set by being especially small or large in numerical value.Taking the median would be a better measure of central tendency in this situation.
Another time when we usually prefer the median over the mean (or mode) is when our data is skewed. As the data becomes skewed the mean loses its ability to provide the best central location for the data because the skewed data is dragging it away from the typical value. However, the median best retains this position and is not as strongly influenced by the skewed values.
