Question

The data attached is from the website listed. The variables are runs scored, home runs, batting averages, errors, win, earned run average, runs allowed and strikeouts. How do I enter info in excel format on here? I'm having trouble with it.

Visit http: //www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2016.shtml. Study the 2016 team statistics Eater the Team Names, Runs Scored, Home Runs, Batting Average, Errors, Wins, Earned Run Average, Runs Allowed, and Strike Outs as columns in a spreadsheet. a) Why should we consider W as the response variable? b) Which variable above was the best predictor for wins in the 2016 MLB Regular Season? why? c) Find the linear regression line for estimated wins based on the explanatory variable in part (b). d) Interpret any intercepts within the context of baseball. e) What would a team have to do in order to win 81 games in the regular season? 95? 110? All 102? f) Graph the line neatly and accurately in an appropriate window. Include the scatter plot representing the teams. Include the points from parts (d) and (e). Show (x, y) is point on the line. g) Plot the residuals on a separate graph. Is there an obvious pattern? What can you conclude? h) Research the team statistics for the 1998 New York Yankees and the 2003 Detroit Tigers. According to your regression model from part (c), did the 1998 Yankees exceed expectations? What about the 2003 Detroit Tigers? Why or why not? Is it a good Idea to use your model? i) Using the paired data (RS, RA), find the linear correlation coefficient r. What do your results imply about the offensive and defensive capabilities of a major league baseball team? Why? Based on the data, what is the best prediction for the number of RA by a team that scored 894 runs? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Firstly what you can do it is,Open an Excel sheet, keep it ready for data entries from the website. Then in the next step what you can do is you can work row-wise. After visiting the website you sited,i saw that you can delete columns from the table given in the website. Just above the table there is an option "Share & more". Go to that option and click on "Modify & Share table". Click on that.Delete the columns you don't need.i.e the variables you don't need. Then go to the Excel sheet.Open and write the column names/variable names which you need. Then from the modified table in the website just select a single row and paste it in the Excel sheet. STEPS: Select the first row (say)-->Right click-->Copy-->open the Excel sheet-->paste.Thus corresponding to the first team you get the data about the variables you need in the Excel sheet. Thus do this for all the teams. You will get the whole data you need in the Excel sheet.

P.S: Do this for all the tables from which you need your variables.Suppose from a table you need a single variable(only one).Delete all the other columns including the team names. What remains is the variable of your interest.Just copy paste it in the Excel sheet after that. Thus by doing like this you can get your whole excel sheet filled with your desired info/data.
