Question
A researcher is testing the hypothesis that consuming a sports drink during exercise will improve endurance. A sample of 50 male college students is asked to consume 4 ounces of the drink during breaks between performing three endurance tests. The average endurance score for the sample is 53. For the general population who have not consumed the drink, the average test scores average 50 with a standard deviation of 12. 1. State the null and alternative hypotheses is words. 2. State your decision regarding Ho and why, and 3. Please write your answer to (b) in the form of a conclusion including the statistical evidence as you would if you were writing a report in APA formatExplanation / Answer
1. Null and alternative hypotheses:
Ho: Consuming a sports drink during exercise doesn't improve endurance. (mu <= 50)
Ha: Consuming a sports drink during exercise improves endurance. (mu > 50)
2. Since we know the population standard deviation, we will use z test here.
Test statistic (z) = (53 - 50)/(12/sqrt(50)) = 1.77
This is a right tailed test so:
p - value = P(z > 1.77) = 0.0384
Assuming level of significance as 0.05,
Since p - value is less than 0.05 we reject Ho.
3. Conclusion:
We have enough evidence to support the claim that consuming a sports drink during exercise improves endurance.
