Question

Given the currents in the two insulated wires in the figure to the right, what is the magnitude of the magnetic field at the point P? a. 1.0 mT b. 2.3 mT c. 40 mT d. 1.9 T e. 90 kT If the current in the vertical wire is reversed (1-10A), what is the magnitude of the magnetic field at the point P? a. 1.2 mT b. 2.3 mT c. 40 mT d. 1.9 T e. 90 kT What are the directions of the current-generated magnetic fields at point P in questions 2 & 3? a. Into Page (2), Into Page (3) b. Into Page (2), Out of Page (3) c. Out of Page (2), Into Page (3) d. Out of Page (2), Out of Page (3) e. To Right (2), To Right (3) f. To Left (2), To Left (3)

Explanation / Answer

2) a) magnetic field due to vertical wire = uoI/2pi*r

= 4pi*10^-7 * 10 / 2pi*1.2*10^-3

= 1.67 mT ( out of the page)

magnetic field due to horizontal wire

= 4pi*10^-7 * 7/2pi*2.2*10^-3

= 0.63 mT (upward direction )

net Mangetic field at P = sqrt(1.67^2 + 0.63^2 ) = 1.9 T

3) if the current is reversed , the magnetic field will remain the same

1.9 T

4) option c) out of the page (2) , in the page (3)
