AKANGAH PROBLEM2: A heat engine that powers a power plant burns 1000 kg of co power. Calculate the thermal efficiency if each hg of engine showing the direction of energy flows. Find also the rate of heat rejected al each hour and produces 500 kW of coal produces 6 MJ of energy. Sketch the heatExplanation / Answer
Problem 2)
Given,
Mass of coal burning each hour = 1000 kg/ hr
So, coal burnt in 1 sec = 1000/3600 = 0.2777 kg
power = 0.27777 x 6 = 1.6667 MJ
electric energy = 500 KW = 0.5 MJ
work output = energy given - energy rejected
rate of heat rejection = 1.66667 - 0.5 = 1.1666 MJ
efficiency = work/heat supplied
efficiency = 0.5/1.66667 = 0.3
2) work output = energy given - energy rejected
= 700 - 250 = 450 KJ
efficiency = work/heat supplied = 450/700 = 0.642
