A. The text defines ethics as "the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group," and specifically as the standards one uses to decide what his or her conduct should be. To what extent do you believe that what happened at British Petroleums (BP) Horizon oil rig is as much a breakdown in the companys ethical systems as it is in its safety systems.

B. Explain specifically how strategic HR management at British Petroleum Horizon oil rig (BP) seems to have supported the companys broader strategic aims. What does this say about the advisability of always linking human resource strategy to a companys strategic aims?

Explanation / Answer

BP was founded in the year 1908. BP had a history of ethical and legal violations. It always put profits above everything else. The subsidiaries in the past were convicted of environmental crimes IN Alaska and Texas. It also had to pay fine for safety violations. They have been involved in questionable and illegal behavior for close to twenty years. The major issues happened in Galveston in 2005 (Jennings, 2009). It is a breakdown of ethical system of the company as much as the breakdown of the safety system.

The HR management system at BP has supported the strategic aims of the company. They have focused on the efforts to use multifaceted strategy and actively engage in diverse and healthy workforce which is productive. The major focus of the company has been competitive compensation and benefit programs. Leadership and professional development has been the support and there have been effective responses for focusing on profit.
