Based on what you have learned from the textbook thus far, what is the relationship between the media and communication? As a manager, how can the media and communication shape your organization? Think of a few communication messaging that you have encountered within the past month or so. What are some trends that you are witnessing through these communications? What do you think is the message the ads convey? Have you found any of these ads/communications to be disturbing or inappropriate? Please provide and example. Utilizing a library database (or a search engine such as Google Scholar), find a recent research article that involves communication and diversity. What was the underlying research question of the study? Do you feel that the study helps to contribute to contemporary and progressive intents to promote positive diversity efforts in the workplace? How?

Explanation / Answer

1) Media and communication:Mass media ( as well as social media these days) are the toolsof communication with which a company interacts with its customers and other external stakeholders too.

The communication tools may be advertising, promotional material, POP material, ATL/BTL communication, advertorials or any other mode through which it communicates. Traditionally, one way communication was quite possible for communicating with a company. It had its own pluses and minuses. While company can always control the adverse publicity, on the other hand, a very useful fedback channel was blocked out.

With social media, the interaction is two way. While the company has an advantage to get immediate feedback, simultaneously, its difficult for him to control negative news and rumours.

As a manager, I will always focus on the communication quality, modes and promptness. I will ensure that most of the communikcation which happens can be used for many different functions:
* product development
* service quality
* product quality
* solving customer grievances.

2)Recent communication: The recent communication which I remember very clearly was the blog of Jennifer Flowers where she had taken on Uber's management and its laidback attitudeor deliberately promoting behaviours which increases possibility of sexual harrasment at workplace. Nothing has dented the Uber's image than one small bog of three pages. Millions of dollars of budget can't resurrect the lost goodwill. The trend these messages convey is (1) Social media use by external as well as internal stakeholders can be challenge to manage. Hence, its better to set once own house in order than being forced to. (2) Social media is getting powerful. Information availability is at a click of mouse (3) In future, social media will be the leading channel for communications.

The message I talked about was not an ad. It was a blog which acted as a whistleblower on wrong practices. These type of communications actually melt all boundaries of internal and external communication. The future organizations will be agile and transparent as well.
