Question
Label the following variables as discrete or continuous and explain why it is so, then verify at least one of the other postings. a. The number of new accounts established by a salesperson in a year. Discrete because it is a number capable of being listed b. The time between customer arrivals to a bank ATM c. The outside temperature today d. A person's height e. The amount of money a person is carrying f. The number of customers in Big Nick's barber shop g. The amount of fuel in your car's gas tank h. Give your own example of a discrete variable i. Give your own example of a continuous variableExplanation / Answer
a) The number of new accounts established by a sales person in a year is discrete because it could take only discrete non negative integer values like 0,1,2,3.....
b) The time between customer arrivals to a bank ATM is a continuous variable as the time could take any value in between the discrete values as well like 1.2 minutes, 1.2345 minutes and so on. Therefore there could be infinite many values that could be taken by the variable.
c) The ouside temperature is a continuous variable as the temperature could take any value in between the discrete values as well like 1.2 celsius, 1.2345 celsius and so on. Therefore there could be infinite many values that could be taken by the variable.
d) The person's height is a continuous variable as the height could take any value in between the discrete values as well like 5.2 feet, 5.3 feet and 3.465 inches and so on. Therefore there could be infinite many values that could be taken by the variable.
e) The amount of money a person is carrying is a continuous variable as the money could take any value in between the discrete values as well like $2.34, $2.243434 and so on. Therefore there could be infinite many values that could be taken by the variable.
f) The number of customers in Big Nick's barber shop is a discrete variable, as there could only be discrete non negative number of customers inside the store.
g) The amount of fuel in a car's gas tank is a continuous variable as the fuel could take any value in between the discrete values as well like 4.5 litres, 3.2143 litres and so on. Therefore there could be infinite many values that could be taken by the variable.
