The phrase “statistically significant” is one of the most important ideas in statistics; yet, it is one of the most often misunderstood. Using the lectures and the readings for Module 5, please address the items below in a non-statistical (Average Joe) language:
What does “statistically significant” mean?
The p-value means the “probability” value. The probability of what?
Given the following information, for each situation (i.e., a,b, & c), would your decision be to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? And what would that mean? Is there or isn't there a relationship between the variables or difference between groups in the population? (Set the level of significance at .05 for decision making.) Provide a clear explanation for your response.
The null hypothesis is that there is no relationship between the type of video game a person plays and the number of violent behavior he/she exhibits (p = .04).
The null hypothesis is that there is no relationship between the amount of sugar one consumes and the level of energy (p = .62).
The research hypothesis is that there is a negative relationship between the number of hours worked and level of job satisfaction ((p = .19).
The research hypothesis is that male and female undergraduate students at CUC differ in their average math SAT scores (p = .02).
Explanation / Answer
In technical terms, a P value is the probability of obtaining an effect at least as extreme as the one in your sample data, assuming the truth of the null hypothesis.
For example, suppose that a vaccine study produced a P value of 0.04. This P value indicates that if the vaccine had no effect, you’d obtain the observed difference or more in 4% of studies due to random sampling error.
P values address only one question: how likely are your data, assuming a true null hypothesis? It does not measure support for the alternative hypothesis.
In your examples,
