As part of my curriculum,I have done a case study in Radiology Department of a Government Medical College in India.I hope this might help you

Purpose of Study

Radiology is one of the highest revenue generating departments in a hospital. Optimal utilization of all the facilities in this department and a smooth flow in the department helps in ensuring customer satisfaction as well as the uninterrupted use of the facilities thereby generating continuous revenue for the hospital. hospital.

           In order to maximize the revenue generated from radiology facilities, it is important that the machine utilization is kept to the maximum without any lag time in between two investigations. Patient satisfaction majorly depends on their waiting time for an investigation and the total time they spent in the system.It is therefore important to document the waiting time of the patients in the radiology department and work towards reducing the respective times to make the facility the best and obvious choice for the patients and consultants.

Objectives of Case study

Types of Data Collection

1.Determining the different equipment in Radiology Department (CT Scan and MRI equipment)

2.Preparing a Process Flow Diagram

3.Working hours of the premises, radiologists, receptionists, and Technicians.Lunch Breaks if any.

4. Three types of patients arrive at the facility and we need to determine the arrival and service times for these patients separately

a)Out Patient Department(OPD) Patient consult with the doctor for his/ her problem and then undergo the investigation prescribed by the doctor and go back.

b) In Patient Department(OPD) Patients are admitted to the ward of the hospital premises and treated accordingly.

c) Emergency Room(ER) Patient is admitted under critical care.Hence they are given priority over OPD and IPD Patients for investigation in Radiology Department.

5) We also need to determine the utilization of the CT Scan equipment and MRI Scan equipment.

6) Study the prevalent appointment scheduling system at the department

Organize Teams

Make two teams:

           The first team will notice the problems faced by the patients waiting in the reception area. They will note the different inter-arrival times of patients. They will look after how Emergency Patients are being handled. They will interact with the patients for any feedback, suggestions and complaints.

            The second team will focus on the utilization of the assets in the department. They will note the service times of all patients, the performance of equipment and technicians. They will note the reasons for different disruptions occurring during the investigation.

Tools to be used to determine the problems

Any Simulation package like ARENA,Tecnomatix can be used to build a simulation model to carry out the study. Different scenarios can be simulated to increase the utilization of the equipment and try to reduce waiting time of patients.
