Question

The data on the right represent the number of live multiple-delivery births (three or more babies) in a particular year for women 15 to 54 years old. Use the data to complete parts (a) through (d).

Age      Number of Multiple Births

15-19   94

20-24   513

25-29   1639

30-34   2828

35-39   1845

40-44   373

45-54   116

Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother 30 to 39 years old

(b) Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was not 30 to 39 years old.

(c) Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was less than 45 years old.

(d) Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was at least 40 years old. Interpret this result. Is it unusual?

Find the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was at least 40 years old.

Interpret this result. Select the correct choice below and fill in the answer box to complete your choice.

(Type a whole number.)

Is a multiple birth involving a mother who was at least 40 years old unusual?

Explanation / Answer

Folloiwng table shows the total number of women:

(a)

Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother 30 to 39 years old.

Ans:

Out of 7408 women, 2828+1845 = 4673 mother are 30 to 39 years old so the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother 30 to 39 years old is

P(involved a mother 30 to 39 years old) = 4673 / 7408 = 0.6308

(b)

Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was not 30 to 39 years old.

Ans:

By the complement rule,

P(not involved a mother 30 to 39 years old) =1- P(involved a mother 30 to 39 years old) = 1 - 0.6308 = 0.3692

(c)

Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was less than 45 years old.

Ans:

Out of 7408 women, 7408 -116 = 7292 mother are less than 45 years old so the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother less than 45 years old is

P(involved a mother less than 45 years old) = 7292 / 7408 = 0.9843

(d)

Determine the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother who was at least 40 years old. Interpret this result. Is it unusual?

Out of 7408 women, 373+116 = 489 mother are at least 40 years old so the probability that a randomly selected multiple birth for women 15-54 years old involved a mother at least 40 years old is

P(involved a mother at least 40 years old) = 489 / 7408 = 0.066

No it is not unusual becuase this probability is greater than 0.05.

Age Number of Multiple births 15-19 94 20-24 513 25-29 1639 30-34 2828 35-39 1845 40-44 373 45-54 116 Total 7408
