Question
Assortative mating is a nonrandom mating pattern where individuals with similar genotypes and/or phenotypes mate with one another more frequently than what would be expected under a random mating pattern. Researchers studying this topic collected data on eye colors of 216 Scandinavian men and their female partners. The table below summarizes the results (rows represent male eye color while columns represent female eye color). For simplicity, we only include heterosexual relationships in this exercise.
(please round any numerical answers to 4 decimal places)
a)What is the probability that a randomly chosen male respondent or his partner has blue eyes?
b) What is the probability that a randomly chosen male respondent with blue eyes has a partner with blue eyes?
c) What is the probability that a randomly chosen male respondent with brown eyes has a partner with blue eyes?
d) What is the probability of a randomly chosen male respondent with green eyes having a partner with blue eyes?
Explanation / Answer
a) Number of males with blue eyes = 114.
Number of partners of non-blue eyed males with blue eyes = 90 - 63 = 27.
=> Number of males or partners with blue eyes = 114 + 27 = 141.
=> Probability that a randomly chosen male respondent or his partner has blue eyes
= 141 / 216
= 0.6528
b) The number of males with blue eyes and blue eyed partner
= 63
Number of males with blue eyes
= 114
=> Probability that a randomly chosen male respondent with blue eyes has a partner with blue eyes
= 63 / 114
= 0.5526
c) Number of brown eyed males with blue eyed partners = 15
Number of brown eyed males = 51
=> Probability that a randomly chosen male respondent with brown eyes has a partner with blue eyes
= 15/51
= 0.2941
d) Number of green eyed males with blue eyed partners = 12
Number of green eyed males = 51
=> Probability that a randomly chosen male respondent with green eyes has a partner with blue eyes
= 12/51
= 0.2353
