Question
28. Parts arrive to the first stage of an assembly system at a rate of 50 per hour, then proceed through four additional stages before the product is complete. At each stage there is a 2% scrap rate, which means that 2% of the products at each stage are declared defective and discarded. (a) What is the arrival rate in parts per hour to the fifth assembly station? (b) If the mean assembly times for the five stations are different, does is make sense to order the stations from smallest to largest processing time, or vice versa? Why?Explanation / Answer
a)
arrival rate in nth assembly = 50*(1-0.02)^(n-1)
here n=5
hence
50*0.98^4 = 46.11841
b)
yes each station percentage scrap rate will change so the largest processing time may vary, depending on the project completion time of the each stage to order the stations from smallest to largest
