Question
18. The probability that Ms. Smith will get an offer on the first job she applies for is 0.5, and the probability that she will get an offer on the second job she applies for is 0.6 She thinks that the probability that she will get an offer on both jobs is 0.15. a. Define the events involved, and use probability notation to state the probability b. What is the probability that Ms. Smith gets an offer on the second job given that c. What is the probability that Ms. Smith gets an offer on at least one of the jobs she , d. What is the probability that Ms. Smith does not get an offer on either of the two information given above. she receives an offer for the first job? applies for jobs she applies for? e. Are the job offers independent? Explain.Explanation / Answer
a)let event of getting job on first offer and second offer is I and II
therefore P(I)=0.5 ; P(II)= 0.6 and P(I and II) =0.15
b)P(II|I) =P( I and II)/P(I) =0.15/0.5=0.3
c)P( I U II) =P(!)+P(II)-P(I and II) =0.5+0.6-0.15=0.95
d)probability =1-P( I U II)=1-0.95 =0.05
e)as P(I) *P(II) =0.5*0.6 =0.3 which is not equal to P(I and II) . Therefore not independent.
