Question

Read “15 years after 'Minority Report': A cautionary film, ignored” by Matt McFarland. A. Imagine you are in charge of developing an algorithm for the Chicago PD to identify people at high risk for gun violence. What would that look like as a probability statement? Clearly define this statement. B. Imagine you are an attorney of a client identified by the algorithm and subsequently apprehended. Develop a probability statement to test the validity of the algorithm. Clearly define this statement. C. What type of probability distribution would the Chicago PD algorithm return? Justify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

(A)As a probability statement this could be stated as "P(The person is at high risk of gun violence)". This probability can be determined by the algorithm that will be developed by the person.

(B) this can be stated as the probability statement

"P(The person apprehended is 'actually' at high risk of gun violence | The person was identified as 'at high risk for gun violence' by the algorithm

(C) This can be an exponential distribution as there will be large number of people who will be at low risk for gun violence and there will be a significantly small number of people who will be at high risk for gun violence and hence a positively skewed distribution seems probable.
