Question

Hi there! I need help figuring out what kind of statistical analysis I will need for a research proposal in Ecology. Below is my procedure:

"I plan to measure the percent of surface area occupied by Salvinia molesta over the surface of the affected and unaffected ponds. I will do this on 10 randomly chosen ponds with varying degrees of S. molesta presence, and another 10 ponds that do not display S. molesta (control). For each pond, I will be measuring the approximate percentage of the pond surface that is covered by S. molesta, and categorizing the pond based on these percentages for dissolved oxygen analysis. There will be 4 rankings for each pond: minimal presence (0-25% coverage), moderate presence (26-50% coverage), substantial presence (50-75% coverage) and maximum presence (75-100% coverage). In addition to measuring the physical presence of Giant Salvinia, I will measure the dissolved oxygen content of each pond to determine the correlation between percent cover and dissolved oxygen content."

So in short, I will be categorizing these ponds into one of 4 categories based on percent cover and measuring the dissolved oxygen content of the corresponding pond. I am just not sure how to go about analyzing the data I collect.

Explanation / Answer

a linear regression model can be fitted by taking minimal , moderate , substatntial , maximum presense of oxygen analysis in 10 different ponds .

spss software cam be used . ( spss data page -> analyze -> regression -> linear .... so on )

then you test the goodness of fit of the oxygen analysis parameters .

by this process you can also measure the correlation coefficient between peercent cover and dissolved oxygen , will get a anova table in excel where R^2 are given .
