You were just appointed to a management position. One of your first tasks is to review all of the employees in your department and assess their performance. It is your understanding there are two employees who need to be disciplined. Since starting 3 months ago, Robert has had intermittent attendance issues, and received verbal counseling from the previous manager. He has been late several times or called off at the last minute making it difficult to find a replacement. In your first week as manager, Robert was late 2 out of 4 days he was scheduled to work. After two week's on the job, the second employee, Connie, continues to make mistakes in her role as a nurse aide. While she is excellent at patient care, she continues to make errors when entering information in patients' electronic health records or at other times fails to enter the required information.

Define the different approaches to disciplining these two employees. Select one discipline approach and explain how you will apply it to their situations.

Explanation / Answer

There are 5 approaches of disciplining-

For the Late comer employee, we should institute the Punishment/Reward approach to disciplining. This is due to the fact there is lack of compliance and adherence to the guidelines, which clearly states that the employee doesn't pay any regard to the authority established in the organization. Punishment approach is usually done when we require the inappropriate behavior to end as soon as possible. Thus, implementing % reduction in pay on late coming and rewards for early birds would be an effective means of disciplining the employee.

For the employee making repetitive mistakes, we should instill a Buddy approach of disciplining. It can be clearly seen that the employee doesn't realize his responsibilities appropriately and doesn't understand the gravity of his/her mistakes. Thus, by providing a mentor, we would be able to explain his/her task in a more clearer manner. This approach is better than any other approach in this situation because we require the person to introspect and self curate himself/herself. Forced curation would provide only detrimental impact in this situation.
