Question

Question Help In an experiment, college students were given either four quarters or a $1 bill and they could either keep the money or spend it on gum. The results are summarized in the table. Complete parts (a) through (c) below Students Given Four Quarters Students Given a $1 Bill Purchased Gum | 30 10 Kept the Money 14 26 a. Find the probability of randomly selecting a student who spent the money, given that the student was given a $1 bill. The probability is (Round to three decimal places as needed.) b. Find the probability of randomly selecting a student who kept the money, given that the student was given a $1 bill. The probability is (Round to three decimal places as needed.) c. What do the preceding results suggest? A. A student given a $1 bill is more likely to have kept the money. O B. A student given a $1 bill is more likely to have kept the money than a student given four quarters Click to select your answer(s)

Explanation / Answer

a) Probability that the student spent money given that the student was given a $1 bill is computed here as:

= Number of students who were given a $1 bill and it was spent / Number of students who were given a $1 bill

= 19 / (19 + 26 )

= 19/45

= 0.422

Therefore 0.4222 is the required probability here.

b) Probability that the student kept the money given that he was given a $1 bill is computed as:

= 1 - Probability that the student spent the money given that he was given a $1 bill

= 1 - 0.422

= 0.578

Therefore 0.578 is the required probability here.

c) Therefore a student given a $1 bill is more likely to have kept the money

Therefore A is the correct answer here.

Note that we are not comparing 2 proportions here we are just comparing what happens when he is given the $1 bill, we have not even considered the 4 quarters case here.
