Question

does Exercise 2.3. (a ) In a class, every student received a grace score of this affect the average score? How does this affect the standard deviation of the scores? DGC-....marks. How I to one of the values in the sample? If so, explain why? If not, give an example. ( c ) In a class of 15 students, the average score is 78· Later, the teacher found that he made mistakes by typing the value of DGC..... instead of 56 and 85 instead of DGC-.... value. Help the teacher by computing the correct score of the class.

Explanation / Answer

2.3)

a) DGC = 45

giving everyone grace marks will increase average marks of 45

the standard deviation will remain same

b)

No , in case of total number of sample being even , it may not be possible

say data is

3,4,6,8

it is sorted , hence median = (4+6)/2 = 5 which is not in the sample

d)

total number = 15 , average = 78

45 instead of 56 and 85 instead of 45

Sum of wrongly calculated sample = 15*78 = 1170

Sum of right calculated sample = 1170 +56-45+45-85=1170 +56 -85 = 1141

hence actual average = 1141/15 = 76.06666
