Question

The System/Information Landscape for Buying On-line

There is no easy way to find the answer to this question, and in fact, I would be surprised if you could find anything to cite as a resource, this paper is more about your ability to analyze a "black box" process or system. You will be graded more on your creative understanding than your book knowledge of the question. Assume you are a buyer on Amazon.com. I want you to trace the buying process for your interaction with Amazon all the way until the product arrives at your house/business. Take into consideration each step and each process that Amazon has to perform to deliver the right product to the right person at the right place. For each step, include what information is needed. Some of the information will come from the buyer, and some from Amazon and some might comes from third-party (outside partners). Assume that Amazon does not make anything, they are a reseller of other people's products. There are at LEAST five different steps, and if you got granular, I could think of another five more. There are at least two other parties outside you/buyer and Amazon that would need to be involved. Again, there is no wrong answer, but I will reward those that spend time thinking about the process and those that skim the surface will be appropriately "awarded" points. You can ask follow-up questions but do in the "Thought-Provoking" discussion posts so that everyone can see the questions and the answers. I might be vague in what I am looking for, but that is because I want you to think about, not read the answer from other sources. There is no word count or page requirement. Just answer the question.

Explanation / Answer

Amazon being an E-kart portal is equipped with back hand designs and simulations which take care of multipronged scenarios and situation. As a buyer, one places an order for a particular item which is nothing but a virtual window shopping, where a particular item is selected from the pool of multiple options available considering the brand and pricing.

Though the interaction between the buyer and Amazon is pretty much straight forward but interaction between Amazon and potential sellers are quite complicated. As Amazon doesn’t produce any item from its own, it has to interact with multiple sellers and keep its SKU’s (stock keeping units) updated. Stock inventory is the most important thing which ensures that items are picked and delivered to the customers on time.

Stock piling is the most critical thing which is driven by the customer needs (demand) and average product rating. Amazon has to devise to a proper forecasting model while running some simulation programmes which can ensure that right material is stocked at right place at right time.

Sometimes, Amazon itself cannot deliver the material by its own delivery system; hence it collaborates with other shipping partner (courier companies) to accomplish the customer needs and demand.

Hence keeping the customers satisfied with it services to the keeping the sellers also dedicated for its demand and supply, Amazon has to take care of multiple factors into the consideration to ensure a hassle free delivery of goods to its loyal customers
