Question

Give your views to this discussion about statistic:The website Sense about Science contained the article Common Pitfalls. I chose this one because it talked about averages and how they can be misleading. The results of studies are captured by a single figure that may not represent all the data in the study. Some common pitfalls are multiple averages, different probabilities, and comprehending the meaning of data without proper context. The average salary of 2 people can difficult to interpret due to a wide disparity in the amount of money each person makes. For instance, one person makes $100,000 and the other makes $50,000. The average is $75,000 but each person makes a different amount. The average is not always a representation of an equal salary.

Explanation / Answer

Quantitative data show certain general characteristics. One of them is a tendency of a data to concentrate at certain values, usually somewhere in the central of the distribution. Measures of this tendency are called averages.

One of the average is arithmetic mean(AM) . Since AM is affected largely if there are extreme values and we get misleading result. The data like salaries may include extreme values. Some people have large salaries and some have minimum salaries. So for such cases makes homogeneous groups and then find the averages. So we get better results and also it can be use for comparison of different groups.
