2. (5 points) Which of the following is a discrete random variable? 1. The average weight of students in Math 2200. 2. The number of students that score 100% on Exam 1. 3. The time I have to wait for the next bus home. (a) I only (b) II only (c) I and II only (d) I and III only (e) I, II, and III 3. (10 points) Which of the following statements is false about the Central Limit Theorem for ? (a) The sample size n has to be greater than or equal to 30 for g to be approximately normal if the distribution of y is left skewed. When the population distribution is normal, the sampling distribution of g is exactly (b) (c) The mean for g, under the Central Limit Theorem is equal to the population mear (d) The standard deviation of g, under the Central Limit Theorem is equal to the 4. Explanation / Answer

2) The definition of discrete random variables says, a discrete random variable can take only some selected or specified values within its range of variation i.e. the distribution function of a discrete random variable is a step function.

Firstly, the marks of a student can be from 0 to the maximum marks can be obtained. So, the average mark of the class will also take anly value within the given range. Now, we can not get a set of values so that the average marks of math will exactly fall in the set. So, it is not a discrete random variable.

Secondly, the number of students to get 100% in the exam is always a non-negative integer. So, we can specify the set of non-negative integers to take the values of the number students getting 100% in exam. So, it is a discrete random variable.

Thirdly, the time I have to wait to get the next bus for home can take any non-negative values. So, surely this is not a discrete random vaiable.

Answer is (b) II only
