11. Refer to the study quoted below: A study (found at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/ abs/10.1080/02702711.2012.739593) employed a convergent mixed-method research design to investigate reading habits of American college students. A total of 1,265 (466 male and 799 female) college students voluntarily participated in the study by completing a self-reported survey. Twelve students participated in semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Descriptive analysis indicated that the mean hours students spent weekly (M) on academic reading (AR), extracurricular reading (ER), and the Internet (INT), were 7.72 hours, 4.24 hours, and 8.95 hours, respectively. What is the population, parameter, sample, and statistic in this study? What type of data was collected?

Explanation / Answer

Here we investigate the reading habits of American College students, hence all the American College students are the Population.

Parameter is mean hours students spent weekly on their readings.

Sample, we have total students participated in this study are 1265 outoff that 466 male students and 799 are female students. Based on sample data we estimated population parameters values.

Statistic, Sample average is the statistic and we tested here all the averages of students spent weekly time on their readings that is academic reading, extracurricular reading and Internet are same or equal.

And we apply Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) on this data. ANOVA is the statistical technique for testing mean values of all variables are same.
