Question
1.67 Views on the DREAM Act: A random sample of registered voters from Tampa, FL were asked if they support the DREAM Act, a proposed law which would provide a path to citizenship for people brought illegally to the US as children. The survey also collected information on the political ideology of the respondents. Based on the mosaic plot shown below, do views on the DREAM Act and political ideology appear to be independent? Explain your reasoning.
Views on the DREAM Act and political affiliation appear to be:
dependent
independent
Explain your reasoning:
From the mosaic plot, it looks like there are more conservatives and moderates than liberals in the survey
It looks as though the approximately same proportion individuals in each group is undecided
From the mosaic plot, it looks as though a higher proportion of liberals support the DREAM Act
Conservative Moderate Liberal Support Not support Not sureExplanation / Answer
Views on the DREAM Act and political affiliation appear to be dependent .
Because from mosaic plot, it is clearly seen that the number of people belonging to particular political ideology of 'liberals' and who support the DREAM Act is significantly higher than the people belonging to other types of political ideology namely Conservative and Moderate. Therefore, although between Conservative and Moderate ideology oriented people, there is no significant difference in the number of people supporting the DREAM Act; there is significantly higher support for DREAM Act from people in Liberal category.
Hence, the information regarding the political affilitation of the person does change our prior belief regarding the likelihood of that person supporting the DREAM Act, and therefore those 2 are dependent on each other.
