I would want to use lower alpha levels in a research study when the results of the study would have significant consequences on whomever was utilizing the study. For example; using a lower alpha level would provide a greater assurance if the results were statistically significant, thereby offering a greater degree of confidence to those using the study. A good example would be a researcher testing a new drug, especially when it could cause serious side effects.

On the other hand, if the results were not considered to be very significant or very consequential, an alpha level of 0.05 may be enough to show significance. An example of this would be if listening to loud music or watching too much TV everyday affects overall health.
