Question
Problem #2 In a college population, students are classified by gender and whether or not they are frequent binge drinkers. Here are the probabilities: Men 0.07 0.36 Women 0.09 0.48 Binge Drinker Not Binge Drinker (a) Find the probability that a randomly selected student is a male binge drinker, and find the probability that a randomly selected student is a female binge drinker. (b) Find the probability that a student is a binge drinker, given that the student is male and find the probability that a student is a binge drinker iven that the student is female. (c) Your answer for part (a) gives a higher probability for females, while your answer for part (b) gives a higher probability for males. Interpret your answers in terms of the question of whether there are gender differences in binge-drinking behavior. Decide which comparison you prefer and explain the reasons for your preference.Explanation / Answer
a) probability that selected student is male binge drinker =0.07
probability that selected student is female binge drinker =0.09
b) given student is male; probability that selected student is binge drinker =0.07/(0.07+0.36)=0.1628
given student is female; probability that selected student is binge drinker =0.09/(0.09+0.48)=0.1579
c)
as for part a) we are comparing propbability on the basis of total population and as total probability for male is less then female therefore due to high weightage of females it gives higher probability of females,
while in part B probability is calculated with in gender from which it is evident that male prefer Beige higher then female.
