For experiment 1, I am testing whether light vs dark conditions affect chirping in crickets.

Experiment 1: Independent Variable: 2 conditions (Light condition and dark condition). Dependent variable: Number of chirps per trial for each condition.

For experiment 2, I am testing whether female/male sex ratios affect chirping rates in crickets

Experiment 2: Independent Variable: 4 conditions=different female/male ratios (0:1, 1:2, 1:1 and 3:2). Dependent variable: Number of chirps per trial for each condition.

Explanation / Answer

for experiment 1, the t-test (for small sample) or z-test (for large sample) for difference of means should be used to test the hypothesis

for experiment 2, ANOVA for mean differences should be used to test the hypothesis.
