Question
What factors might explain why the results of the convenience sample are di from the results of the random sample? 3e. eon able wn When you conduct the random-sample simulation is it possible that you might choose 10 residents who all favor the senior center? Is this result possible when you conduct the convenience-sample simulation? In which simulation do you think this result is more likely? 3f. 3g. What are some limitations or drawbacks of the simufations? In a town of 25 residents, it is likely that the mayor could actually survey all the residents, instead of using a random sample or convenience sample. What are some reasons that sampling might be used in situations involving populations that are much larger than 25? 3h.Explanation / Answer
3e) The results of the convenience sample differ from those of random samples. This is because in convenience sampling, the sample is selected such that it would be easier for the surveyer (or more convenient) to collect the sample, while simple random sampling involves selecting any sampling unit selected randomly. So it is possible that the samples selected vary and thus give different results such as mean, variance etc. However the results will depend on factors like attitude of the worker, homogenity of the popuplation from which sample is to be selected, sample size and so on.
3f) When we conduct a random-sample selection, all sampling units are equally likely to get selected. Hence any sample of 10 can be selected and hence we can select 10 residents who all favour the senior centre. However thsi result is much more probable in convenience-sample simulation, in which the sample is selected so as to make it convenient for the surveyer.
3g) Limitations of the simulations:
- We might get biased results due to the sample selected.
- We might skip some important values while sampling.
- The sample selected might not be a good representative of the population.
- Sample size should be carefully chosen.
3h) Sampling should be used when population is large enough (in this case 25). The reasons are
- Cost of surveying all population
- Time of surveying all population
- Destructive Nature of population (example light bulbs).
